SOCIAL STUDIES is a multi-day experience that brings artists and brands together for community-driven programming, with the primary goal of empowering and educating Black and BIPOC youth to exercise and access their creativity. Having shown up at Miami Art Basel in 2017 and in NYC in 2018, the activation moved online for 2020, emphasizing a central theme of social justice education. Conversations between cultural figures such as curator and writer Kimberly Drew, Obama and Clinton alum Paola Ramos, designer Jerry Lorenzo, and screenwriter Lena Waithe, were paired with an online art gallery, library, educational resource hub, and charity tee designed by Cynthia Lu of Cactus Plant Flea Market. A collection of digital ‘Vote’ stickers were also created exclusively for the event by artists such as Virgil Abloh, Verdy, and Emma Kohlmann. Something Special Studies led concept development, web design, web development, graphic design and production of the digital experience. SOCIAL STUDIES is an ongoing project led by Angelo Baque, Shaniqwa Jarvis, and SSS.
