Summer of Something Special (SoSS) is an annual photo book by Something Special Studios. This marks the publications third edition.
Every volume features a new selection of photographers from around the world, each capturing summer as they see it, each encompassing a distinct visual style and narrative. The publication can be seen as a group diary - an ode to summer - each photographer communicating that particular summer energy in a way that only they can.
The publication is composed of a mix of established and emerging photographers, and each year, one photographer in SoSS is chosen from public photo submissions. For Volume III, that photographer was Nathalie Basoski.
All proceeds from the third volume of SoSS went to Ghetto Film School. Ghetto Film School (GFS) is an award-winning nonprofit founded in 2000 to educate, develop, and celebrate the next generation of great storytellers. To highlight our partnership with GFS, we set up an interview between SoSS photographer Ibrahem Hasan and up-and-coming GFS photographer, Ciara Zoe, inviting them to find common ground in the creative process. Then, we created a newsprint to document their conversation. The newsprint is included with each purchase of Summer of Something Special.
In addition to the book, SSS created postcards (one for each photographer) and a celebratory tee.
Photographers featured include: Bafic, Nathalie Basoski, Robin Bernstein, Kennedi Carter, Jasmine Clarke, Christopher Currence, Ibrahem Hasan, Djiby Kebe, Zhenya and Tanya Posternak, Noah Sahady, Peter Sutherland, Ramona Wang, and Kersti Jan Werdal
SOSS Vol. III was featured in i-D magazine. It is available for purchase via our web store and in select stores internationally including Printed Matter (NY), Karma (NY), Lichen (Brooklyn), Arcana (LA), Dale Zine (Miami) and stacks bookstore (Japan), to name a few.
